New ways to save water when the heat is on
As the temperature climbs across the country this summer, Smart Approved WaterMark – Australia’s national outdoor water conservation label – has good news: there are some simple new ways we can all save water even when the heat is on.
Among the latest products to have received Smart WaterMark approval are several for saving water in the garden. Soil wetting agent Grosorb and Baileys Moisture Mulch from Rockingham-based company Baileys Fertilisers, and wholesale product Aquamor Mulch from Perth’s Eclipse Soils, have all recently been awarded the Mark.
Services are also eligible for the Mark, which has recently been awarded to the WA Water Corporation’s Waterwise Plants for Perth Gardens database. The free online service makes planning a water-wise garden easy by listing more than 1000 commercially available plants that will flourish in Perth gardens when watered only once a week or less frequently.
“The Smart WaterMark is only awarded to products and services that show advances in water saving. The scheme’s Expert Panel, which includes seven independent experts drawn from the gardening, plumbing, irrigation and water industries, continues to be impressed at the level of innovation being used to develop solutions to our water challenges,” says CEO of Smart Approved WaterMark, Julian Gray.
“Increasingly, people are looking for help when it comes to choosing water-saving products and the Mark makes it easy to identify those that live up to their claims,” continues Julian.
In total, more than a dozen products were approved by the Smart WaterMark scheme’s Expert Panel at their last meeting. The others include ‘smart’ irrigation products, a controller for switching between rainwater tank and mains water supplies, and a water-saving device for the shower.
Over 160 products and services now carry the Smart Approved WaterMark label, including products for the garden, irrigation, and cleaning products, as well as pool covers and other products for use around the home.
The Smart WaterMark is funded by the Australian Government’s Water Smart Australia program and supported by all states and territories. It was established by Nursery & Garden Industry Australia, Water Services Association of Australia, the Australian Water Association, and Irrigation Australia.
