Minister officially launches EcoHort in Queensland
Queensland took another step forward in developing sound environmental practices with the official launch of EcoHortTM on April 30th.
Opened by the Minister for Primary Industries & Fisheries Tim Mulherin, the event was also attended by President of the QLD Farmers’ Federation Gary Sansom. Sansom commended the EcoHortTM program as a demonstration of the industry’s leadership in sustainable production.
EcoHortTM takes up the environmental challenge through a set of guidelines to ensure sustainable environmental practice. Developed by the industry and recognised by all levels of government, EcoHortTM is the Environmental Management System (EMS) for the Australian nursery industry and the preferred tool for assessing and managing environmental risks.
“EcoHortTM shows how business impacts on the environment and manages natural resources,” said John McDonald, Nursery Industry Development Manager, NGIQ. “It encourages sound environmental stewardship, and allows businesses to be recognised for the good work they’ve done.?rdquo;
“While EcoHortTM is a voluntary program, it’s hoped all nurseries will eventually participate,” John added.
Twenty two businesses received their certification at the EcoHortTM launch. Forty six businesses have met EcoHortTM requirements to date.
Workshops have been developed to introduce business owners and managers to EcoHortTM and give participants an understanding EMS. For more information visit http://www.ngia.com.au/training/comingsoon.asp.
