Six up, one to go Queenslands youths freshen up for NextGen launch
Young Queenslanders in the nursery and garden industry are getting set for the launch of NextGen in their state next month, making Queensland the sixth of seven States and Territories to embrace the NextGen initiative.
Set for 22 June, the launch will entice 18 to 35-year-olds from around the state to join in the fun and get networking with other young and motivated industry members. Organised as a cocktail function, the event aims to set the social scene for the Queensland NextGen group.
Following in the footsteps of the Victorian and NSW associations, NextGen Queensland is a social networking, training and development program for 18 to 35-year-olds. Members meet regularly for social events, career development and training workshops.
With groups now in various stages of development in six out of seven States in the Australian nursery and garden industry, NextGen is proving an invaluable tool for both members and the industry at large.
“The idea is to get younger people more involved in the industry,” said Sharon Ible, Queensland’s Business Skills Development Officer. “Young people who are employees rather than business owners may not hear much about the news, challenges and developments going on. NextGen is one of the ways to change this."
“We are also planning to link training to the NextGen forum, which will hopefully encourage the continued development of our up-and-coming members."
Queensland’s NextGen committee is headed by Clair Levander, who said that “the inspiration behind NextGen is to think of working within the industry as a lifetime career."
Clair is also looking to develop a mentoring program within NextGen.
The Queensland launch of NextGen will be held at Botanix Lifestyle Garden Centre at Wellington Point.
