The 2009 Urban GreenScapes Symposium will unveil the benefits of plants and green-life in the urban landscape and bring together all stakeholder groups to drive unity of message and create a stronger platform on which to engage government.
With international speakers, the Symposium will position green-life and plants as part of the solution in the global warming debate, with the aim of getting urban green-life on the political agenda for Kyoto Mark II and carbon trading schemes. Held in Australia’s Capital, it will bring green-life to the forefront of policy makers, with the aim of gaining universal government support for increased urban greening.
The National Conference (February 18 to 19) will discuss the issue of working together more cohesively to create improved profitability and better satisfaction of consumer demand. Retail consultant, author and speaker John Stanley will lead the discussion ‘Ten things I hate about you’. In this part of the plenary session input will be welcomed from the floor and both growers and retailers/end users can talk about how to further cooperate to achieve better outcomes for all.
The Conference program will also address the need for newcomers and youth to grow the industry now and into the future. The panel discussion, ‘It’s more than just a job!’ will feature Brian Merrick (Gardens r Us), Andrew White (Oasis Australia), Anthony Kachenko (NGIA National Environmental & Technical Policy Manager and recent PhD graduate), Ross Wilson (2008 National Young Leader and Coastal Nursery owner) and Kate Malfroy (Director of Jamberoo Native Nursery). The panel members will discuss ways of finding staff, educating them and retaining them. They will also discuss what the industry can offer it to its people that other industries cannot.
Jeff Cooke of Ramm Botanicals says it is a must attend event for growers. “This conference will inform growers about new markets for green-life and about the real needs of their customers and how to grow sales.”
As well as being educational events, the 2009 Urban GreenScapes Symposium and National Conference & Exhibition are fantastic opportunities in which to network and better get to know industry peers, a good time to let the hair down and have some fun.
On the Wednesday night (February 18) the Gala Dinner will held at the Great Hall, Parliament House where the winners of the prestigious 2009 Nursery & Garden Industry Awards will be announced. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to enjoy food, wine and marvel at the architecture and history that is the Great Hall.
